Apart from the obvious, to assign a grade and decide who gets into further education or a job, what is the point of all the testing and examinations our students endure at school?

John Hattie, leading education expert at the University of Melbourne, believes the purpose of most assessments is not to measure precisely how much students know at a given point in time, rather, it is to provide information to teachers about the impact of their teaching on students so that they have the best information possible about how they need to change and adapt.

Assessments are powerful tools for improving teaching and learning when they provide timely, informative reports directly related to what teachers have taught. This allows teachers to constantly monitor their impact on students and get feedback about their teaching and how it can be improved to get the best possible results. A powerful tool is to also get students to self-assess and take responsibility for their learning. After all, it is their schooling, their lives, their futures that are at stake in classrooms.

One explanation: When the cook tastes the soup, it is formative; when the guests taste the soup, it is summative.

We are approaching that end of the term when students are facing their summative assessments, the examinations that will show their accumulated knowledge, skills and learning mastery. The results of some of these examinations will be crucial for the futures they are planning for themselves. Their results should help students understand their own progress in learning 鈥� what they can do, what they cannot yet do, where to go next.

This is valuable information for parents too. Examination results give you a snapshot of where your child is, at this moment. Use the results, not for blame or recriminations, but to discuss how they got to this point, where it leads them for next year and what they need to do to achieve better results or to maintain their steady progress.

In Term 4, the Year 12 students, as the first cohort in Queensland, will face the external exams that form part of the new ATAR system. Many students will no doubt be nervous about this new experience. This is normal and to be expected. The College has put a lot of initiatives in place to support students in their preparation for the exams and we are confident that they will do well. All Queensland seniors are in the same boat.

Math teachers have been trialling various types of feedback for their students, including audio and video feedback.

Students have relished these new approaches, as have parents who have access to feedback via the 国产精品 Parent Portal.

During the time of lockdown and remote learning, and with the current interstate travel bans and the ongoing lockdown in Victoria, social media apps and programs like Zoom have been helping people keep in touch and stay connected. But we will all agree that virtual forms of socialising are poor substitutes for being there in person. There is something special about just being in the presence of other people.

We are all hoping that restrictions will ease further and that we will be able to travel to see loved ones and gather in greater numbers. Because we are not made to be in isolation from each other. As the bible verse above reminds us, we are a part of the body of Christ.

This also means that we must strive against isolating ourselves from others because of selfishness, disagreements, self-righteousness, fear and shame. Things such as these can keep us from the blessings of community 鈥� friendship, love, belonging, support 鈥� because we can let selfishness separate us from even our closest ones.

In Christ, God has broken down the dividing wall between He and us and brings us into a forgiven family of believers.

As we look forward to a time without masks and social distancing & limited numbers, and to the time we can embrace our friends with hugs, let鈥檚 take comfort in knowing that we are never separated from God or His love for us, and let us work towards breaking down dividing walls between us with love and forgiveness.

Hello all, I hope you are having an enjoyable term so far.

It was a pleasure to hear so many positive comments about the different style of Parent Teacher Interviews this year, requiring us all to connect through video conferencing. Many staff reported that parents were very happy with the service and convenience it offered to discuss the end of Semester 1 reports.

After last term's reporting, it should be clear to students what they need to do to achieve their potential in this semester鈥檚 assessment. I would like to thank all parents and care providers for the critical role they play in partnering with the College by supporting your children at home, monitoring assessment due dates and maintaining our clear expectations on uniform and behavior.

Year 10 into Year 11 (2021) Subject Selection

Mrs Wright, Subject Leaders and Mrs Bolton have been talking to all Year 10 students in the weeks leading up to the subject selection event to give them advice and guidance on suitable study and career pathways. I have presented information on the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) to Year 10 Home Groups and this presentation is also available for review by students and parents via the . I strongly encourage parents to review these documents to build understanding on what is involved and to make informed subject choices.

Parents and students in Year 10 need to consider career aspirations, subject requirements, prerequisites and performance in these subjects so far, so that students can make informed decisions and maximise their chances of obtaining their QCE by the end of Year 12. For students who are looking towards university entry after school, this is critical to ensure the best ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) for entry into courses.

Year 10 Work Experience - Week 10, Term 3

Work experience placement for Year 10 students will take place in Week 10 of this term.

We are looking forward to students returning with many stories. In the past many have been incredibly positive, some have been less so, but all of these experiences are formative and allow our students to make decisions about which direction to take in subject selection and future career pathways.

Year 11 Camp - Week 4, Term 4

The Year 11 Camp to Echo Creek is scheduled for Week 4 of Term 4, 2020. A Parent Engagement evening to clarify the QCE and ATAR requirements for senior study will be held via Zoom. The presentation will start at 6:00 pm, please register your intention to attend through the link in the invitation letter that was sent out via Student Caf茅 and the .

ATAR External Examinations 2020 - Week 4, Term 4

Year 12 students are entering the final phase of their studies and will begin the External Assessment phase in Week 4 of Term 4.

External Examinations are scheduled over three weeks, which leads them up to the final week (Week 7) of graduation. With the significant contribution of the External exams (25-50%) to final grades, it is essential that students work hard on their revision to maximise their contribution towards their ATAR.

Year 12 students are now beginning to enter the revision phase as Unit 4 theory is completed. A program of study and tutorials is in place during the six Periods of Sport and Religion & Ethics (course now completed). Careful monitoring and support of students has been initiated to ensure that students obtain their QCE and quality ATAR results. Curriculum and Pastoral Care staff have been working tirelessly to provide supplementary tutorials, courses, support and advice.

I would like to thank them for their continued and unwavering dedication in supporting our senior students.

Thank you to Boarding for allowing the Boarders Recreation Centre to be used for the ATAR testing throughout the year which has provided students with authentic exam conditions to maintain assessment integrity and prepare them for QCAA External Assessment.

We should be very proud of our 2020 Year 12 students and their efforts to navigate through such a difficult year.

'Public use' sample external assessment papers were developed to help schools and students prepare for external assessment in 2020.

The introduction of external assessment in General subjects is a key feature of the new QCE system. To give school communities a sense of what external assessment will be like, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has published sample papers on its . These papers are located in the Assessment tab on each syllabus page of the website.

We will incorporate these sample resources in our teaching and learning program to help our students prepare for next year. In the meantime, students and parents are encouraged to view the sample papers.

Senior students are reminded that they should still be wearing ties this term and that a hat is required at all times.

The support of parents in upholding correct school uniform is essential in achieving a school that we can be proud of and I thank you for your support.

Last month we had Dr Anna Hayes speak with the Year 12 students. Dr Hayes is a Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at JCU. We are blessed to be able to work with our local universities in Cairns, who enrich our experiences offered to students.

Due to COVID restrictions we are still unable to have parents on campus. As a College we value this interaction between home and school and understand that in not coming in you are missing some of the action of what is happening, so I hope you enjoyed the above video.

Here is more of a wrap up of what has been happening so far this term:

Prep

It has been amazing to see Prep students actively engaging in writing sentences. Some are up to writing two to three sentences on their own!

In Media Arts they have been using an iPad to take photos of what they like about school and then making it into a digital story book.

In PBL they have looked at what makes things move and they made their own moving toy or machine with a class partner.

Year 1

100 days at school has been a big celebration for our Year 1 classrooms and this culminated in a dress up day, like you are 100 years old!

In science they looking at properties of materials and have completed experiments with playdough and ice. In English they are studying 'once upon a time' stories, even changing a character within the story and retelling it in their own words.

Year 2

The students report that they are pushing their brains learning lots of Maths at the moment! They are balancing this with learning the game of cricket in HPE lessons and they found a new love of the sandpit at break times.

They have looked at how to find things using Google maps as part of their PBL 'special places' unit of learning.

Year 3

Students have been busy studying the connection between the earth, sun and moon, including using kids pix to draw their interpretations of this.

In Japanese they have been practicing writing in Hiragana script. Practicing their skills of community service, the students are currently writing letters to send to a retirement village in Victoria.

Year 4

What is the difference between area and perimeter? Ask the Year 4鈥檚 to sing the song they have been learning in Maths.

In Christian Studies they are looking at the Life of Jesus which will culminate in a diorama. Combining English and technology, Year 4 students have made bristle bots out of a toothbrush head, motor and battery and are now starting to write the matching procedural text as a PowerPoint.

Year 5

The classroom is starting to take the form of the small beachside town of Dingo Creek. Students will take on the roles and perspectives of people in the community and look at the pros and cons of the town, developing to become more tourist orientated.

More happenings in the Junior School

• Dr Cameron Stelzer spent time with us looking at writing and illustrating books.
• We all have buddy classes from Middle and Senior School visiting and doing all sorts of fun learning and activities.
• The Natural Fertility Services (NFS) group helped us learn about the Wonders of Living.
• Mr Bonser has been into classrooms looking at Digital Technology skills, including having some fun with Minecraft Educational.
• Year 4 girls participated in a 6-week program on Friendship with Mrs Rowan and Miss Chantal.
• Year 5 boys have been spending time with Mr Dunsmuir looking at self confidence through the Rock and Water program.
• Year 5 girls are working through a Self Esteem program with Mrs Rowan and Mrs Dare.
• Choir is busy singing twice a week.
• Assembly and chapels are still occurring via zoom with a different classroom hosting each week.

Mr Keith Davis has been in Prep every Thursday this year. He has now accepted a full-time position in a State school for the remainder of 2020. We thank Keith for his awesome work in Prep and wish him every blessing as he continues his learning journey.

We welcome Mr Ian Harris to this position starting in Week 7 of this term, for the remainder of this school year.

As we approach the end of term, students in Year 10 will be making their subject selection choices for 2021.

Aside from the traditional academic pathway that many of our students will follow, other students will be considering careers where vocational education and training courses will be a more suitable option and in line with their career aspirations.

Once again, the College, in partnership with a range of service providers including TAFE Queensland North, Aviation Australia, the CaPTA Group and CQ University, will be offering students the opportunity to enrol in a range of Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses as part of their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

The VET in Schools Program provides our students with the opportunity to experience competency-based, adult style learning whilst obtaining practical skills in readiness for life after school.

A recent study by social researchers McCrindle (Perceptions Are Not Reality: myths, realities & the critical role of vocational education & training in Australia, May 2017), report the trends currently influencing the Australian workforce. It outlines the key role VET is playing in developing our emerging workforce by delivering training directly correlated to the skills demanded by industry and employers.

Most importantly, all of the VET courses offered to our students whilst still at school will also contribute to the attainment of their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). The majority of courses attract four (4) QCE points.

Many of the VET courses on offer will provide students with a study pathway directly into Diploma or higher certificate courses at the completion of Year 12. This is a great option for students if they:

• Have a keen interest in working in a trade (e.g. electrician, hairdressing, plumbing, carpentry, health care, aviation)
• Are considering an apprenticeship or traineeship
• Are not considering university studies in the near future
• Unclear about what they would like to do after year 12
• Have decided to pursue a non-ATAR pathway

Courses available to students under the VET in Schools program also align with the expected skill shortages predicted in our region over the coming years. This means their skills will be in demand by employers across Queensland.

Junior school students welcomed author, Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor, in Week 3.

Dr Cameron鈥檚 books include "The Stroogle", "Scallywags" and "Pie Rats" series. As well as being an accomplished author, Dr Cameron is also an artist and teacher.

Our students had a fun day of storytelling, writing and drawing activities.

Thank you to all of our super readers in Junior School who completed the Premier鈥檚 Reading Challenge. Data is currently being collated and will be shared with students and families in the next newsletter.

Certificates from the Premier of Queensland will be presented to students in Term 4.

Book Week will be held in Term 4 during the week of 19^th October. This year鈥檚 theme is 鈥淐urious Creatures, Wild Minds鈥�.

This year the Book Week dress up day will be open to all students across the College for the first time. Staff and students can dress up as their favourite book character and bring along the book to the parade.

We will also be holding a Book Fair, where students can purchase books, posters and trinkets. A percentage of funds raised will be used to purchase resources for the Learning Centre.

Our students have been having loads of fun creating felt craft this term. Miss Marcelle has been passing on her sewing skills, teaching students how to hand sew purses, zen frogs and Totoro plushies. Students have also progressively completed many of our community jigsaw puzzles such as the periodic table, Harry Potter and Star Wars.

At the present time the P&F is unfortunately unable to hold face to face meetings. The executive committee are presently working in conjunction with the College to assist with additional resources to support our school community through the COVID Pandemic.

We are also looking at applying for grants as there are currently many one-off COVID grants. If anyone in our school community is interested in assisting with the grant process please contact us, we would welcome the support and interaction.

Father's Day Gift Stall

Our Father鈥檚 Day gift stall will run as usual this year in the Junior School undercover area and we will have some great gifts available to purchase. These will be priced at $5 and $10.

Year 11 students are currently studying a Module called 鈥楻eligions of the World鈥�. As part of enriching our student experience in authentic ways, we invited Rabbi Ari Rubin from the Chabad of Northern Queensland to give us some insight into Jewish traditions and beliefs. We are grateful to Rabbi Ari for being willing to share his insight and beliefs with our class.

This year, we interacted via Zoom. The students prepared questions beforehand and asked some very interesting questions. Our assessment this term is designed to answer the focus question: 鈥淗ow can I have an active appreciation of the religious and cultural differences of others?鈥�, which allows students to investigate one religion of interest in greater detail and compare and contrast this religion to others.

Year 10 students have begun to unpack the life of Martin Luther. We are now developing an analytical essay that focuses on one key event of his life, to explain how Martin Luther demonstrated his religious citizenship. The focus for this study is, 鈥淗ow does spiritual identity influence a person鈥檚 thinking and actions?鈥�.

Martin Luther is not only significant in the Lutheran Church, he was instrumental in the Reformation, which is a time in history when the world was changing. Martin Luther鈥檚 actions had far reaching consequences for the world, including access to education. This is something we can all be grateful for.

Year 12 students are able to use their current Religion & Ethics timetabled sessions for revision and dedicated study towards their external exams. This is due to their Religion & Ethics course being completed and all assessment handed in.

At this time of year, it is reassuring for students to know that they have secured a pass in both Units 3 and 4 as a pair in this subject. This then gives two points towards students鈥� Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), adding to the points already allocated for successfully completing Unit 1 and Unit 2.

These study sessions are opportunities for students to access our Careers Advisor, Mrs Bolton, or speak with members of the Year 12 Pastoral Care Team about a range of things, including post-school options.

Megan is a Cairns local who has spent the last three years in Brisbane where she gained experience in enrolments and international program management.

Megan will be assisting with enrolments at 国产精品 and also expanding the foundations of our International Program through support of current students and engagement of Agents for the future growth of our program.

Mathematics Teacher, Tony Cridland

Tony comes to 国产精品 with 24 years experience teaching Mathematics and Physical Education across North Queensland with his most recent position being Head of Mathematics at St Augustine's College.

Tony has had the unique pleasure of teaching some students at 国产精品 whose parents he has taught in the past!

Legal Studies Teacher, Rachael Philp

Rachael has joined the 国产精品 teaching team to teach Year 11 and Year 12 Legal Studies classes. Rachael is a highly experienced Legal Studies lecturer with James Cook University and brings a wealth of experience and expertise teaching in this specialised area.

Prep Teacher, Ian Harris

Ian has recently completed a Master of Teaching in Primary Education, undertaking placements at local private schools during his studies. Post-studies, he worked in the primary school at Trinity Anglican School.

Ian joins our Prep teaching team on Thursdays each week, through until the end of the current school year.

Chef - Boarding, Frank Dummel

Frank has worked in the hospitality industry for many years, gaining a broad range of experience in many diverse properties, predominantly 5-star hotels as well as island resort properties, airline and remote mine site catering, and remote mine site catering, both within Australia and overseas.

Frank has joined us in the boarding kitchen, preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner for our boarding students.

Catering Assistant, Nicholas Barnard

Nick has worked in the hospitality industry for the past three years as a Kitchen Assistant at a local resort. Nick joins us in the boarding kitchen and tuckshop.

Boarding Senior Resident, George Sailor

George is well known to our 国产精品 community having been a previous student and College Captain. George graduated from 国产精品 in 2017 and went on to pursue his love of football as a Rugby Referee, training which he commenced whilst completing his senior schooling at 国产精品.

The Senior Environmental group are looking for volunteers to help with continuing their recycling efforts. As the end of the Year 12 students' studies approaches we need students to take up the torch and continue this effort which is now in its eleventh year.

The group does a fantastic job of mulching, planting and sorting our collected recycling to make sure that none of the bins are contaminated with food or non-recyclable materials. Any other recycling ideas or initiatives would be very welcome.

Many students are currently seeking references for their university place applications and accommodation. Participation in community efforts such as this reflect very favorably on our participating students and make for an interesting resume.

We were honoured for our students to showcase their own collection in the 2019 CIAF Fashion Show and although we were unable to create a CIAF collection for this year's event, some of our students have still been involved - Boarding students, Kenny and Kyle, were invited to be a part of this year's Fashion Performance.

Well done to these boys for stepping up, and stepping out of their comfort zone!

With many of us feeling a little anxious in these times of uncertainty, our Year 11 students took it upon themselves to try and lighten the situation by creating fun lunchtime activities that formed part of the week-long COVID Olympics.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award enables students to gain valuable life skills and earn a point towards their QCE.

The Award involves participants having to complete a physical activity, service and skill for one hour per week for three months. However, the bits that everyone looks forward to are the adventurous journeys; two days of hiking through Cairns鈥� rugged terrain.

This year due to COVID restrictions, the two compulsory adventurous journeys were reduced to one. The Speewah camp site finally opened to 20 people, so the team headed into the Barron Gorge National Park for quite a taxing 20km hike through dense rainforests and the odd creek. Participants have to carry everything they need for the two days. With the cumulative weight, you soon realise what you don鈥檛 need: hammers, bath towels and even leeches are just some of the things that you don鈥檛 want to lug about.

This year brought perfect weather, having an extremely warm 17 degrees at night. Even with a few 鈥渨ait- a-while鈥� moments, all of the students got a lot of enjoyment and camaraderie out of the experience. Bring on 2021!

A wonderful initiative and great leadership by our Senior students who have expressed a keen desire to help Middle and Senior students with tutoring in Math, English, Science, History and Geography.

The after school sessions have been a wonderful success and much appreciated by all students.

If you are interested in enrolling into the kindy for the coming year, you are invited to attend an information session and orientation morning at the Kindy on Saturday, 12th September 2020, between 9:30 am - 11:30 am.

The Kindy will be offering three groups in 2021, enabling children to be able to attend between two to five days per week.

For children to gain the full benefit and best learning outcomes for their approved kindy year, one of the following weekly programs is requested to be undertaken:

• Kindy 1 - 3 days per week (Monday to Wednesday)
• Kindy 2 - 2 days per week (Thursday and Friday)
• Kindy 3 - 3 to 5 days per week (Monday to Friday)

The Approved Kindergarten Program that is offered at 国产精品 Lutheran Kindergarten is funded as a long day model, operating between 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday, for 48 weeks per year, closing on all public holidays and four weeks at the end of the year.

AFL junior development school holiday program.

The Queensland Government is seeking the support of the school community for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2019, before completing Year 12.

This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician鈥檚 Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

Parking in Cowley Street

We have had some instances where cars, when parked along Cowley Street (in front of the 国产精品 Centre), have blocked part of the road of the STOP, DROP AND GO exit on to Cowley Street. This has caused issues for our College buses that require adequate space to be able to enter and exit safely from the STOP, DROP AND GO Zone, as well as being a safety concern in general. Please take care to ensure that your car is parked safely on Cowley Street and that all road access areas are clear.

Student safety whilst crossing roads

It has been reported that a student was witnessed crossing the road unsafely on the Western Arterial Road, and did not use the designated Pedestrian crossing at the Harley Street intersection traffic lights. The student was estimated to be approx. 10-11 years old. Parents and Caregivers are urged to remind your children about the importance of road safety and using the designated pedestrian crossings.
