Dear Members of the 国产精品 Community,

On behalf of the College Council, I am delighted to announce that Mr Shane Jurecky has been appointed as the next Principal of 国产精品 Cairns, commencing in January 2023.

Shane currently holds the position of Principal at Good Shepherd College in Hamilton, Victoria, where he has capably served for the last 8 years.

Shane expressed his excitement for the opportunity to embark on a leadership role here in Far North Queensland. Shane has strong connections with Queensland, having served as the Head of Curriculum and Pedagogy and also as Campus Principal at St Peters Lutheran College, Indooroopilly and Director of Staff at Pacific Lutheran College, Caloundra.

During his 26-year career in Lutheran Schools, Shane has had the opportunity to build his leadership credentials across various senior leadership roles which have seen him serve at six Lutheran schools, across three states.

Shane was drawn to our K 鈥� 12 College and the solid foundations that have been built over the last decade of leadership, acknowledging the opportunity he has to grow our school to the next level, embracing our strategic plan and focusing on areas for growth to develop pathways to support our students into their future.
Being a boarding student at Immanuel College for 5 years during his own school years, Shane appreciates the value a combined day and boarding school offers a regional community and how the multicultural aspect enriches all those involved.

Shane has a Master of Education, Postgraduate Certificates in both Educational and Business Leadership, and a Graduate Diploma in Theology and Education. He is a passionate, dynamic and progressive leader, whose vision has always been to foster an authentic and caring Christian community, where all can be inspired to be active contributors to the wider community.

Over the coming weeks, Shane will visit Cairns to embark on the exciting process of finding a home for himself and his wife of 26 years, Sarah. Shane and Sarah have two grown daughters, Emma (26 years) and Sophie (24 years) who both work within the Lutheran Education sector. Shane mentioned that he enjoys football of all types, he supports the Adelaide Crows in the AFL and most importantly is an avid QLD supporter for the State of Origin, once again lending to his many years spent here in the Sunshine State.

We congratulate Shane on his appointment and look forward to welcoming him to the 国产精品 community at the start of Term 1 in 2023.

Prior to Shane鈥檚 commencement, he will connect with Elisabeth to ensure that he is well placed to commence leadership at the College at the start of 2023. On behalf of the College Council, I extend our gratitude to Elisabeth for her continued service and focus as the Principal of 国产精品.

Dear parents and friends,

Community, one of our four school values, is about coming together, building positive relationships, and working towards a common goal. Human beings are made to live in a community, and this aspect of my role here at 国产精品 is certainly something I highly value.

This year we have been on a journey to develop our new Strategic Plan; a document that is framing the future of our school community. A Strategic Plan helps us work together towards a common goal for the benefit of the students in our care and for all involved. I hope that this new Strategic Plan will achieve just that.

Data collected from the survey conducted late last year, together with feedback from students, staff and community members during informal feedback sessions, have helped shape the plan. I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has provided feedback in various forms.

I am excited about where this Strategic Plan will take 国产精品 in the coming years and look forward to sharing it with you early next term when it will be officially launched.

As Term 3 nears its end, and we look forward to the term break, it is also the time of changing seasons. Spring officially begins on the 1^st of September, but nature doesn鈥檛 follow our calendars and the signs of spring, such as an earlier sunrise and the blooming of flowers, may not be noticed on this date. Of course, here in Cairns, one of the signs of Spring is the increase in humidity and I think we have all noticed that already.

Changing seasons reminds us that change happens in life as well. We grow and change, and our circumstances change as well. Some of these changes we enjoy and others are challenging. And whether we like it or not, change is guaranteed.

In the story of Noah and the Ark, after the flood, God describes the seasons to Noah as a promise of His loving presence after the Flood: 鈥淎s long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.鈥�

Year after year we experience the rebirth of spring, the heat of summer, the colours of autumn, and the cold of winter. While varying in intensity from climate to climate, the seasons nevertheless remind us of God鈥檚 creative power and His orderly rule in nature.

For this reason, we rejoice that God has sent us a 鈥淢an for All Seasons,鈥� His Son Jesus Christ. Born at winter鈥檚 midnight hour, He grew up walking the roads of Palestine at seedtime and harvest, including a winter visit to Jerusalem. He went to death for our sins and rose from the dead during a glorious springtime and offers us eternal life with Him long after the season's end.

Thank You, Lord God, for giving us the seasons. As we proceed through the seasons of life, we thank You for the presence of our crucified and risen Saviour, Jesus. Amen.

Chapel for Secondary school is regularly on Wednesday mornings at 8:15 am and for Primary school at 2:10 pm on Friday afternoon. Parents and carers are welcome to join us for chapel.

Families of the College are invited to join members of Trinity Lutheran Church for worship on Sundays. Service times at Trinity, on Severin Street in Manunda, are advertised on the parish .

Church services at the College continue during the school term, and all members of the 国产精品 community are welcome to join us at these services which are advertised through the school app and social media.

With the September holidays arriving soon it is encouraging to see a high level of industry in and around the College as students complete their final assessment, and look towards a well-earned break.

I would like to thank all parents for the critical role they play in partnership with the College by supporting students at home, monitoring assessment due dates and maintaining our clear expectations on uniforms and behaviour. The continues to see high use and is an essential tool in making sure you are aware of events, due dates and expectations.

Secondary students are reminded that as we enter the final summer term the requirement to wear a tie is relaxed but the correct uniform (including an appropriate hat) is required at all times. The support of parents in achieving the correct school uniforms is essential in achieving a school that we can be proud of and I thank you for your support.

Year 12 QTAC Information Evening

Date: Tuesday, 6th September 2022 from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

This session provides detailed information about QTAC and the application processes involved with studying beyond school. The QTAC Information Evening is relevant for all students and families, including those who are considering studying at TAFE, deferring study or having a gap year. During the session, we will cover key dates, how to apply, how to decide which study preference to put first and how to reorder preferences later.

Experienced teachers will be available, on a drop-in basis, to provide one-on-one personalised support for each Year 12 student and their family to submit a QTAC application.

General subject students will sit a mock examination in Week 10 of this term to identify any gaps and weaknesses in their revision so far so that the remaining weeks are used effectively for students to achieve at their highest potential in the final examinations.

Thank you again to Boarding for allowing the Boarders Recreation Centre to be used for the ATAR testing throughout the year which has provided students with authentic exam conditions to maintain assessment integrity and prepare them for QCAA external assessment. We should be very proud of our 2022 Year 12 students and their efforts to navigate through such turbulent times.

Year 12 students are entering the final phase of their studies and ATAR exam students will begin the External Assessment phase in Week 4 of Term 4.

External examinations are scheduled over three weeks, which leads them up to the final week (Week 7) of graduation. With the significant contribution of the external exams (25-50%) to final grades, it is essential that students work hard on their revision to maximise their contribution towards their ATAR.

In preparation for the September holidays and the final phase of revision, Year 12 students and parents will receive a report at the end of this term stating the results so far for internal assessments (IA1-3). This is aimed to clarify where a student is currently in each subject and provide some focus for their final revision for external examinations. I encourage parents to discuss this with their children and set some clear goals for the days and weeks leading up to their examinations.

鈥楶ublic use鈥� sample external assessments- sample papers were developed to help schools and students prepare for external assessment in 2022.

The introduction of external assessment in General subjects is a key feature of the new QCE system. To give school communities a sense of what external assessment will be like, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has published sample papers on its website at: . They're located in the Assessment tab on each syllabus page.

We will incorporate these sample resources in our teaching and learning program to help our students prepare for next year. In the meantime, students and parents are encouraged to view the sample papers.

From student ranking data the subject lines are now being finalized. Final subject selections from these lines will take place via a web interface that students and parents can access in the coming weeks.

Students in Year 10, in conjunction with their parents, need to consider career aspirations, subject requirements, prerequisites and performance in these subject areas so far to assist students in making informed decisions and maximise their chances of obtaining their QCE by the end of Year 12. For students who are looking towards University entry after school, this is critical to ensure the best ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) for entry into courses.

The preparations are now complete for Year 10 students to embark on their work experience placement in Week 10. We are looking forward to hearing their individual experiences and stories. In previous years some students have secured ongoing paid employment and even offers of an apprenticeship through the positive impression they have given our industry partners. Whatever the outcome, these experiences are formative and allow our students to make decisions about which direction to take, or not take, in subject selection and future career pathways. In addition to the regular recycling activities, the Environment Group has been very busy beautifying the grounds with some extensive planting this term. It is only with the valuable time, input and advice from teaching and ground staff, that our students enjoy these opportunities to give back to the community.

The Secondary school Environment Group are always looking for volunteers to help with continuing their recycling efforts. As the end of Year 12 student studies approaches, we need students to take up the torch and continue this effort which is now in its 13^th year. The group does a fantastic job of mulching, planting and sorting our collected recycling to make sure that none of the bins is contaminated with food or non-recyclable materials. Any other recycling ideas or initiatives would be very welcome.

Many students are currently seeking references for their University place applications and accommodation. Participation in community efforts such as this reflects very favourably on our participating students and makes for an interesting resume.

Our College Open Day on the 6^th of August was a fabulous event that showcased our community spirit. Tours were held through the school grounds and our Concert Band, and Jazz Ensemble both performed.

Several classrooms were open so parents and visitors could get a feel for what happens in each year level from Primary through to Secondary school, and teachers were on hand to talk about curriculum and pedagogy.

Children took part in the 国产精品 Discovery Trail, where they had to move from classroom to classroom, complete an activity and collect a stamp. When they had completed the Discovery Trail and collected all of the required stamps, students earned a prize.

The 国产精品 Green was a busy place throughout the morning with a charity BBQ organised as well as fairy floss and face painting. We had free Barista coffee and cupcake decorating stations at Caf茅 Garna. Students could also enjoy the inflatable dart board and the Bungee Run that helped burn off some excess energy.

There was a great family feel to our Open Day this year. A big thank you to all of our amazing staff and students who helped out and supported the event.

This term, children in Year 1 celebrated 100 days of learning. All of the children and teachers dressed up as 100-year-old people and learned all about life 100 years ago. They took part in a carousel of activities related to the number 100 and played games that children would have played 100 years ago. They finished their morning by having a yummy morning tea together with lots of special treats.

In Week 4 of Term 3, Year 2 participated in their annual Vintage Day activities. The classroom was set up as an 鈥榦lden day鈥� classroom from around the early 1900s. Many asked about 鈥榯he cane鈥�, but we assured them that we absolutely would not be using one! We had students dress up in their best olden day costumes and conducted activities like singing 鈥楪od Save the Queen鈥�, checking hair and nails, chanting spelling, reading out loud as a class, and spelling and writing sentences with chalk on our chalkboards. In the afternoon, we played vintage games 鈥� marbles, pick-up sticks, hoops and croquet.

Overall, it was a fun day and we had some very interactive discussions about how a school may have been many years ago, how it has changed, and which style students think they may prefer.

This term, Year 3 explored the module, Melting Moments, to understand which materials will melt when exposed to heat. The students were separated into groups of three to test a variety of objects including chocolate, butter, metal and plastic spoons, oil, and water. They examined their properties at room temperature, made predictions and then placed them in the sun for a number of hours. Later the students reexamined the materials to see if their state had changed from solids to liquids or remained as solids.

The following lesson involved freezing these materials to test students鈥� predictions of each material鈥檚 changing state. Student groups recorded their observations throughout these experiments and drew illustrations to support their writing.

To complete these experiments, the class had a discussion on the changing state of honey at room temperature and then after freezing. There were many surprised scientists when they examined the results of this experiment.

Week 6 of the term saw us celebrating Science Week as a whole school. Primary students got a double dose of fun. Mrs Michelle Cummings (Head of Science in Secondary) ran a Science Fair with her secondary students for Years 4-6. Students saw some pretty cool experiments and got to test their scientific knowledge by answering questions about what they were seeing along the way.

Mrs Karen Evered spent a day as our roving scientist working with Prep - Year 3. She put together science experiments that our youngest scholars could enjoy participating in and learning from.

Year 1 conducted a flying saucer experiment that illustrated how forces work together to move objects.

A very big thank you to these talented teachers who were willing to share their love of science with their students.

Once again, 国产精品 celebrated NAIDOC Day in style.

Mrs Krystal Taylor organised her Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students to run some fun activities for Primary students on our hardcourt. We learned a traditional song, painted and decorated all morning, soaking up some cultural vibes around our College.

Chapel that afternoon was an exciting mix of students showcasing their talents and sharing their hopes and dreams. Guest speakers and school leaders immersed staff, students and visitors in the unique culture of our school.

We are honoured to share this special event with them every year.

This term we have been involved in extra sporting opportunities in the community with students participating in Netball, Soccer and Futsal. Still to come is cricket.

Thanks to Mr Brown for organising these events for us to participate, learn and have fun.

This term we welcomed two new staff to our Primary team. Mrs Hisako Kotzur has joined us as our Year 1 to Year 5 Japanese teacher, and Mrs Jackie Smith has joined us as our Year 4 teacher for the remainder of this year. We are delighted to have them on board.

Another term, another busy period of sport at 国产精品. Even though our inter-house carnivals and the majority of TCN trials have taken place, several of our students have been kept busy with a variety of sporting pursuits. Read on to find out all that is happening with our JSS rounds, and representative sports in athletics, netball and rugby league

The past few rounds of JSS have seen some fantastic results for our JSS teams. Even though we are a small school, we definitely punch above our weight when we come up against the likes of Cairns SHS, Saints (Augustine鈥檚 and Monica鈥檚) and St Andrew鈥檚.

Our Girl's and Boy's Basketball have led the way, along with our Girl's Touch and Girl's Volleyball teams, who have also secured victories. However, even though other results for the remaining teams haven鈥檛 always gone our way, they have all played with pride, and spirit and showed a massive improvement since Round 1. The dedication and commitment that has been shown by all students definitely does not go unnoticed.

I would also like to give a huge shout-out to the JSS Academy students who, even though aren鈥檛 selected to represent the school in their chosen sport, still turn up each week with a smile on their faces and a fantastic, positive attitude. A huge thank you must also go to Mr Fernandez and Miss Di Grazia, whose work with the academy students is very much appreciated.

JSS this term wraps up in Week 9 with a home game against local rivals St Andrew鈥檚. Well done so far everyone and keep up the great work in Term 4.

The Peninsula Track and Field Championships were held at Barlow Park on Sunday the 21st and Monday the 22nd of August. With a spot in the Peninsula team up for grabs, several of our students delivered outstanding results. A massive congratulations must go to Ella N (15 Girls Long Jump) and Charlie W (15 Years Boys High Jump) who both finished first in their respective events, gaining themselves selection in the 2022 Peninsula Track and Field team. Ella and Charlie will now go on to compete at the state titles, to be held in Brisbane later in the year.

Friday of Week 7 saw close to 60 students and five staff represent our great College at the annual Fowler鈥檚 Cup. This was the first time a number of the students had played Netball. It was a day of mixed results with our Year 7 team, Year 8/9 team and our Year 10/11/12 Team 2 winning throughout the day. We also had two boys' teams enter and the highlight was definitely when they came up against each other in their second last game of the day. The Year 9 boys team secured bragging rights over the Year 11 boys team, winning a close battle 14-13.

Week 8 presented the opportunity for several of our male students in Years 9-12 with the chance to play Rugby League with their schoolmates, one that does not come around very often. Even though quite a few of our boys do play Rugby League on the weekend, they all play for different clubs. The chance for all of them to put on the PLC jersey and run out with their closest friends was fantastic to see.

Our Senior team took on Freshwater Christian College in what was a see-sawing battle. After we scored the first two tries, Freshwater then took a stranglehold on the game and used the home support to their advantage, running out 30-22 winners.

Some of our Year 9 and 10 boys also played in the newly formed FNQ Secondary Schools 9鈥檚 Rugby League Cup. This was the first time a number of our Year 9 boys played Rugby League and even though they did not win a game, they played with passion and pride for the PLC jersey and showed a massive improvement by the end of the day. Our Year 10 team, on the other hand, were a force to be reckoned with. Coming up against established Rugby League schools in Bentley Park College, Cairns SHS and St Mary鈥檚, our Year 10 team ended up winning four out of their six games. Once again, these boys, who are all seasoned players, showed plenty of passion and pride in the PLC jersey. Fantastic effort from all of the boys and big things are on the horizon for them in 2023.

This term has been a very busy one for Primary school sports, with quite a few events to report, including lots of achievements to celebrate. Please read on to find out about our wonderful successes in our representation in athletics, netball and soccer.

A big thank you to our school Gap Students who are Boarding Supervisors. Without their help and support, it would have been very difficult to take our children to all these sporting events. So, thank you, Cassidy, Sheree, Ethan and Shaun. We really appreciate your time and support.

TCN Athletics

The TCN Athletics Carnival was a wonderful success. We had 33 students participate over the two days and all were great ambassadors for the school.

There were 18 primary schools in attendance. Schools from the Daintree, Julatten, Kuranda, Cairns and everywhere in between. Some highlights of the individual places were:

• Luanna G, U10 1^st Place in the 100m, 200m and Discus 2^nd Place in High Jump and Shot Put;  3^rd Place in the 800m
• Arin H, U11 2^nd Place in Discus
• Lachlan F, U11 3^rd Place in Discus and Shot Put
• Saffryn T, U12 1^st Place in the 1500m and 800m; 3^rd Place in the 200m

Special mention to Luanna who was the U10 Girls Age Champion and Saffryn who was runner鈥搖p in the U12 Girls age group. Saffryn also set a new TCN record in the 1500m. Her time of 5.44.56 broke the old record by 14 seconds. Amazing effort!

Our mixed relay teams performed like seasoned veterans in their races. The U10 team finished in 2^nd Place; the U11 team finished in 5^th Place and the U12 team finished in 3^rd Place. Congratulations to Quinn L Sebastian W, Hannah T, Luanna G, Jabez A, James T, Milla W Sienna M, James G, Lucas N and Saffryn T.

We accumulated 231.5 points which placed us 5^th overall. However, the final places are awarded on an aggregate score which takes into consideration the number of students in Years 4 - 6. I am delighted to announce that the 国产精品 Primary team finished FIRST! Wow, I am so proud and happy for the children. It is amazing to say that as a school we are the TCN Athletics Primary Winners for 2022.

Peninsula Athletics

Five of our Primary students qualified for the Peninsula Athletics Carnival across the U10 - U12 age groups. They were Lachlan F, Saffryn T, Levi S, Luanna G and Arin H. Congratulations to Luanna who won the U10 Girls 200m race! Luanna has now been selected for the Peninsula Athletics Team.

We entered seven teams in the FNQ Schools Futsal Championships.

The U8 Boys team had a great day and narrowly missed out on a semi-final place. We had two U10 Girls鈥� teams. One team was slightly younger than the other as the U8 competition was cancelled due to a lack of teams. Both our teams played really well and ended up playing against each other in the semi-finals. Our older team narrowly prevailed and booked their place in the Grand Final. After a very closely fought battle, our U10 Girls won and were crowned 2022 champions. Congratulations to Luanna G, Summer C, Eden A, Ariella C, Lilly J, Aapti S, Hannah T and Emilia M.

Our U10, U11, and 12 Boys鈥� teams and our U12 Girls were a little unlucky with their draw. Each team faced some very strong opposition and unfortunately didn鈥檛 qualify for the 鈥榝inals鈥� round of games. All of the players enjoyed themselves on the day and I believe have gained some confidence from this experience.

We entered two mixed teams in the recent U10 and U12 non-competitive netball tournaments. Though no scores were kept, (both teams outscored their opposition in five out of their six games) our two teams had very successful days improving their gameplay and cohesiveness with each game. I am looking forward to next year's event and think that some of our players, with more practice, could take the leap into competitive competitions.

The Jamie Gosling Soccer Tournaments were held over two days at the Holloways Sporting Complex. We were blessed with dry weather after the recent rain and our five teams all performed well. Our U8 mixed team finished 5^th in their competition and the U10 boys finished 7^th in theirs. Our U10 Girls were unlucky to lose their semi-final match but then, won the following game to finish 3^rd. Our U12 Girls grew in confidence and composure throughout their tournament. Unfortunately, the girls lost their final game in a penalty shootout and finished 6^th. Our U12 Boys played a wonderful tournament and though the results didn鈥檛 fall our way they could have easily found themselves in the top 4. They finished 8^th out of 19 teams and defeated the overall winners, St Andrews, 1-0 in our very first game.

Some wonderful individual highlights.

• Hannah T finished tied 2^nd for Most Valuable Player in U10 Tournament
• James T finished tied 2^nd for Most Valuable Player in U12 Boys Tournament
• Luanna G won Most Valuable Player in U10 Girls Tournament

Congratulations to our Year 9/10 team - Pluto, Maggie, Honey and Maggie - who participated in the Readers Cup on the 3^rd of August. This was the first year that our College has participated in the Year 9/10 Regional Finals. The team did exceptionally well, coming in the top 5 on the day.

Thank you to all the students, staff and families who helped us celebrate Book Week. Students from Primary and Secondary dressed up as their favourite book characters for the Book Week Parade. Primary staff dressed in 鈥淲here the Wild Things Are鈥� themed masks, and then we celebrated with a picnic on the 国产精品 Green. This year鈥檚 theme was, 鈥淒reaming With Eyes Open鈥�. Students helped us to create a wonderful Rainbow Serpent that adorns the wall of the Learning Centre.

Year 5 Students helped us celebrate the CBCA shortlisted book of the year titles by reading them and writing book reviews, which are on display in the Learning Centre and will be published on the Library Website.

This year's Book Week Book Fair was again a huge success. Thank you to all the families who purchased books, posters and trinkets from our Book Fair. We are currently finalising the details and will give an update in the next newsletter.

Thank you to all the students who participated in the Premier鈥檚 Reading Challenge. The reading period has now closed and we anticipate receiving the certificates from the Premier and celebrating our College鈥檚 achievements later in Term 4.

During the month of August, we have celebrated many things including science week and the 国产精品 Open Day. This was a great opportunity for all the families to see what we get up to in OSHC.

As many of you are already aware Mallory Lloyd (Service Leader) is currently on leave, having a well-deserved holiday. The group meets in a relaxed atmosphere on a monthly basis during term time to plan key College events. We continue to be encouraged by the support shown for this new community group.

During the September school holidays, Year 12 students can participate in the JCU STAR program workshops to help them prepare for the upcoming external exams in either Maths Methods, Chemistry or English. Highly experienced Year 12 subject teachers will help break down the marking scheme and provide tips and tricks for tackling multiple choice and short response questions.

  Junior (Year 3 - Year 6 in 2022) and Senior (Year 7- Year 11 in 2022) Blast camps provide campers with the ultimate 6-day adventure! High adventure activities, outings, electives and games get kids out of their comfort zone, try new things, and spend time in the great outdoors. As an evangelism camp, we explore the Christian faith through connect time and guest speakers.

  Kids Camps (Year 3 - Year 6 in 2022) and Christian Life Week (Year 7 - Year 11 in 2022) Camps are discipleship camps with a strong focus on worship, small group time and growing in faith. The 5-day camp has a culture of friendship, connection, engaging conversations, and plenty of beach and adventure activities and games to put a smile on camper鈥檚 faces and get their hearts pumping.

Would you like to be involved in raising funds for and ?

The Queensland Government is seeking the school community's support for the annual survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who left school in 2021, before completing Year 12. This short, confidential survey collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The results of the survey help provide valuable information to improve services available to school leavers in the future.

Between August and September, these school leavers can expect to receive instructions to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician鈥檚 Office. Please encourage them to take part. If their contact details have changed, please assist the interviewer with their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate.

The College has a team of dedicated staff who, together, look out for the pastoral care needs of our students. The Student Welfare Officer may provide support to students over a designated period of time, however, if a student requires ongoing and extensive support, the Student Welfare Officer will liaise with external agencies for further assistance as necessary. It should be clarified that the role of our Student Welfare Officer is not one of a 鈥楽chool Counsellor鈥� and that as a College, we are unable to provide ongoing counselling support.

Meeting with the Student Welfare Officer is via appointment or in emergency situations as the need arises. Our preferred referral process is for parents to please make contact with their child鈥檚 Home Group or Classroom Teacher as the initial point of contact. This allows us to consider ways we can best provide appropriate support as a school.
